Halloween Sock Gnomes

I thought I would start with what I have been working on at the moment. Halloween sock Gnomes. How cute are these and they are made from socks!!!

Here is a list of the items you will need:

Crew Length Socks in white
Crew length socks in a color or pattern (the fuzzy ones are best)You will need two of these unless you want his hat and his clothes to be the same colored sock. It is best to find two socks that coordinate and compliment each other.
Toy Stuffing
Small rubber bands
Thread
Long hair fake fur
Jute or ribbon
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Powder blush (to color the nose)
Scissors
Embellishments (optional)
Yarn, Fabric strips, Mop Strings (to braid for the hair of the girl Gnomes)
Glass accent gems/stones (to give weight to the base)

Cut the crew sock at the heal point- cutting off the ankle portion. Place the ankle portion aside.

Place 10-15 glass gems at the bottom of the sock. Stuff the sock with the toy stuffing.
Leave about 2 inches at the top. Secure with several rubber bands.

To make the nose – pinch a good chunk of sock with the stuffing and work it back and forth squeezing your fingers in together to form a nose. The size depends on you. As you can see mine all come out different – some are large some are smaller.Using several rubber bands secure the nose. I rub a bit of blush (using my finger) on the nose to give it a rosey look.

Choose one of the colored socks, the one you want for the hat. Cut it across the heal. Place the ankle section off to the side – you can use this for another Gnome as his clothes. I tend to choose socks for the hat that have a different color at the toe area. Once stuffed and rubber banded it becomes an adorable pompom on the the top of the hat. Take about a golfball size amount of toy stuffing and place it in the toe portion of the sock. Using several rubber bands wrap the toe area to create a pompom.

Take the other colored sock and cut it across the heal. Take the toes section and put it aside. you can use this for another Gnome as his hat. With the ankle section you can dress the Gnome placing the part you cut up toward his head. Pull it up about 1/2 in from the base of the Gnome. Stretching it up toward his head. Put the heal portion toward the back of his head. It should tuck up close under and around his nose as high as possible without bunching.

Cut a 4×4 in square of fake fur. The direction you cut it matters. Also you want to try and only cut through the backing, try not to cut the fur itself. It will help it look and lay more naturally. Get the fur going in it’s natural direction. Cut it so the length of the fur is straight/verticle. Cut it into a 4×4 square.

Next cut the fur into a triangle. Lay the square with the fur flowing down. Mark the 1/2 way point along the bottom of the square. Draw a line from the upper corners to the mid way point and cut it into a triangle. Reminder be careful to only cut the backing not the fur as much as possible.

On the top edge cut a half circle or V notch at the halfway point. It should measure about 1 1/2 inches across and 1/2 inch deep. This will allow the beard to tuck up under the nose of the Gnome.

Optional: Braids for the girl Gnome. I used 1 in wide strips of soft eggshell cotton muslin fabric. I got it from our local re-use store. It looks like someone cut the salvage off of fabric. It worked perfect with the little fringe on the edge it adds to the look of hair in the braids. You can use anything yarn, strips of other fabric or even the strings from a cotton mop. You can make them as thick as you want as well and any color you want. I started with strips 1 inch x 20 inches and braided a fairly loose braid using rubber bands on the ends to secure the braid. The end result was about 10 inches in length. I then trimmed the ends below the rubber bands to my desired length and so they would be even with each other. For the girl Gnome, skip the steps for the beard. =) To attach her hair I just hot glued it across the top of her head either in front or behind the “topknot”. Decorate with ribbon/string/jute on the ends.

Now to attach his beard. Pull his clothes away from the bottom of his nose. Put a line of hot glue along the top back edge of his beard. As you place it tuck it under and around his nose and up as high as it will go on his cheeks and toward where his ears would be. It needs to be high so you can tuck the edge of his hat over it. Put additional glue as needed to secure it and tuck it up close to his nose.

Tie thread around his nose, top knot and the pompom on his hat to secure in case the rubber bands break.

Pull his hat on. Take the heal portion and center it and fold/tuck it back on itself like a cuff around the top of his nose. Put a bead of hot glue on the bottom front rim of the cuff and tuck it down and around his nose. Place a bead of glue where the hat meets his clothes, right at the side of his beard, pulling the hat over his clothes and the corner of his beard to secure it. Secure the back bottom edge of his hat to his back with a bead of glue. Puff the hat by gently pulling the pompom and draping down his back as far as it will go.

Embellish him with flowers, ribbons, jute, gems etc.
