Bag making with Heavy Duty Vinyl

Creating and imagining heavy duty vinyl used in inflatable toys into something new.

Have you ever bounced on a blob into the water or slid down an inflatable slide off a dock or the side of a yacht?

FunAir™ is the leading manufacturer of inflatables. The material they use is top notch. I was fortunate to be asked to help them repurpose some of their used and discontinued vinyl. It was amazing and challenging to work with.

I hope you enjoy this post of my journey in working with this amazing company and their product. I worked with Jenn from sales and operations.

The Crossbody

Here is what I came up with. First up was an original asymmetrical cross body bag.

It was fun and challenging planning the bag panels so they made the best use of the printed letters and logos. 

The diagonal front pocket added a modern element and when possible incorporated the actual straps that help to secure the inflatables to the boat or dock. The strap acted as the closure for the top of the bag and incorporated a swivel lobster claw clasp and a D-ring. The front pocket included a magnetic snap closure.

I played with whether or not to line the bag. It really did not need it but in the end I decided I liked it better with the lining. This one I lined with a navy canvas that had sailboats on it. The linings were repurposed fabrics from the Austin Creative Reuse Center.

Most of the linings were waterproof canvas. I had white, beige and gray. I settled on doing some in white and some in gray.

The bags measure 18” x 14” with the front cross pocket and a divided 5” high pocket on the back.

The crossbody strap connected diagonally across the bag utilizing an installed grommet (one on the front and one on the back) and a spring O ring. The strap is ¾” nylon webbing and has a D-ring on each end with a swivel lobster claw clasp. There is a bar buckle as well that allows the strap to be adjustable. The straps were reinforced with rivets. 

There is a snap closing pocket on the inside.

The Boxy Bag (Toiletry Bag)

I also created some boxy bags (toiletry bags) for them.

For this bag I used the waterproof canvas on the top where the zipper is as well as used the waterproof canvas as the lining. The rest was FunAir™ vinyl and I added a pull/hanging loop on the end. The FunAir™ logo was printed on printable vinyl and covered with Waterproof tape and then sewn on. This bag measures approximately 5” X 5” x 10”.

Large Market Tote

The big market tote was a lot of fun to do. It measures  approximately 18x 16. It has a pleated box bottom and is unlined. It has shoulder strap handles that are nylon reinforced with rivets where they connect to the bag. This is a very sturdy bag, great for groceries or a trip to the beach.

Key Fobs

I also created several key fobs in two designs. The wrist strap and the triangular bottom flat rectangular one. I printed the FunAir™ logo on printable vinyl, covered it with a waterproof tape and then sewed it on the vinyl. This was a great use for the smaller pieces of the vinyl. I tried to use as much of the material as I could – leaving little waste.

Zippered Pouch

I created some zipper pouches. Each one was different, incorporating the writing in a unique way. They had a zippered top and a nylon wrist strap. They ranged in size from 4×5 to 5×6.

The Swim Beach Bag

This beach/swim suit bag was a lot of fun to make. This piece utilized an actual tube of vinyl that was used as a bumper for the slides. Because it was a tube there was no sewn side seam on it. The side seam was sealed as part of the original product. This seam, as you can see in the picture is very thick and posed a bit of problem. It was very difficult to sew across so I ended up using a rivet to secure the top folded hem down. This bag is unlined and utilizes grommets around the top to allow the bag to be gathered. I used cotton rope to gather it around the top and the strap is adjustable and made of nylon. It is attached to the bag with nylon tabs and D-rings. It includes a key strap with an attached small zippered pouch. My thought was to have a place to keep things dry, like a cell phone, inside the bag. I loved how I was able to utilize the wording as it wrapped the bag. I think it came out so cute. It really got my creative design juices flowing to work with this cylindrical tube! This bag measures 14×18.
